Radon in SchoolsRadon is a colorless, odorless gas that is a product of uranium. Radon has a symbol of Rn. Radon can cause serious lung problems especially in children. Radon is dense and it can release harmful and dangerous gasses. Radon can be inhaled quite easily and can lead to the destruction of lung tissue as well as lung cancer. Radon in schools is of particular concern. Radon in schools can be easily detected by using special radon testing kits. Radon testing kits are readily available and will quickly identify the presence of radon. Activated charcoal testing kits are available for the purpose of identify the presence of radon in schools. Radon in schools has been a growing problem and efforts are made to reduce radon in schools.Radon testing in schools is a process spanning over a period of three days. Radon testing is highly recommended for detecting radon in schools. Test results tend to be more accurate when testing is spread out over a three day period. Therefore, a three day period of testing may be required to properly identify radon in schools. There are certain rooms that should be tested for radon within a school. Hallways, gymnasiums, classrooms, bathrooms and closets are places that must be tested within any school when looking to identify radon. Classrooms are of particular concern because the classroom is the one room where students spend the majority of their day. In addition, the corridors or hallways must be tested accurately. Hallways and corridors are high traffic areas within any school therefore they should be given special attention when conducting radon testing. Basements should also be tested when a radon test is being conducted. Any area near the ground or situated on top of a slab of concrete can be a breeding ground for harmful radon. The EPA recommends regular testing for the presence of radon within schools . Radon can break down into radioactive particles and children can be particularly susceptible to illness. The health of children should be a number one priority. Radon testing should take place in three phases. First, an initial radon test should be conducted using the charcoal testing kit. If you receive a reading of 4.0 or higher, then a second, more in-depth measurement should be taken. Once the second test is done and results are received, action needs to be taken to reduce the harmful radon levels within the school. Radon in schools can be controlled and significantly reduced by using proper venting techniques. Proper ventilation can allow harmful radon gases to escape a confined area thus reducing radon in schools. This technique is quite effective and is continually used to reduce radon in schools. Reducing radon in schools will reduce the chances of students and staff from becoming ill. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) recommends radon testing for schools on a regular basis. The EPA can also address any concern or questions regarding testing procedure and techniques. Radon in schools is a problem that if addressed early can be easily controlled. Radon in schools can cause serious health concerns if it is not handled correctly. Radon testing and removal is quite inexpensive and testing kits can be easily obtained.
